For a starter, we ordered baked homemade cheese, while for the main course we tried two house specialties: beef shank cooked under the traditional sač and rolled pork roast.
We also had a Šopska salad without onions, and for dessert we tried excellent homemade pancakes with Eurocrem and Plazma biscuits, as well as pancakes with homemade jam.
The food was generous, tasty and the portions were more than enough. The only thing we would point out is that the waiter brought the starter and the main course at the same time, which is something the restaurant should pay a little more attention to.
The meat was juicy and tender, and special praise goes to the pork on the menu. As we have mentioned more than once, there are not many restaurants that offer a wider selection of traditional meat dishes, and pork definitely has an important place in Serbian culinary tradition.
Right at the entrance to the restaurant, there is a memorial plaque showing that in 1915 this was the headquarters of the organization known as the Black Hand.
Outside, there is a small garden with tables, while inside the restaurant offers a spacious dining area, as well as a beautiful hidden garden. Because of that, Stara Srbija has enough capacity for celebrations and larger gatherings.
The interior is warm and full of character, with decorative plates on the walls, white tablecloths and charming details, including cutlery with traditional tavern motifs and a bust of Radomir Putnik.
Inside, you feel as if you are stepping into a preserved piece of another time. This is definitely a place worth visiting not only for the food, but also for its rich history.
The service was excellent. We also found out from the waiter that there is live music in the evenings, so on weekends the restaurant becomes a place for both good food and good atmosphere.
If your travels take you to Kragujevac, this is a place where you can enjoy traditional food and stay late into the night with live music.
So, if you are wondering where to eat in Kragujevac or where to try authentic traditional food in Serbia, Stara Srbija is definitely a place worth visiting.
