We tried an excellent chicken soup, served the traditional way – in a pot, so you can ladle out as much as you like yourself. Although we ordered one portion, it could easily have fed another person too; it was that generous. The scent of homemade soup steaming at the table, with old-town music playing softly in the background – pure pleasure.
For lunch, we had chicken liver wrapped in bacon, a dish you won’t find in many places around the city, and it was excellent. We also tried grilled ćevapi with homemade potatoes, along with a beautifully seasoned cabbage salad.
The place is designed to evoke times gone by. Blue walls, red-and-white tablecloths, old photographs of the Almaš quarter on the walls, a menu written in Cyrillic… it is clear that the hosts truly wanted guests to feel as if they had stepped into another era, a time when guests were valued, warmly welcomed, and could leave their worries behind in a kafana, over good food and music.
Considering that the restaurant owners were once also behind the fantastic kafana Biblioteka, it is no surprise that the nightlife here is excellent as well. From Thursday to Sunday, there is live music from 8 p.m. until the early morning hours. However, if you want to get a table, you need to book weeks in advance, because the place gets extremely busy.
The service is excellent, with a well-coordinated and experienced team. First and foremost, praise goes to the owner, who is almost always there to welcome guests, make sure you get the best table, and ensure everything is just right.
It is not easy to run a new restaurant that turns into a lively nightlife spot in the evening, but they manage to do it beautifully. In the past year, the same waiters and staff have remained, which shows that, alongside good food, the most important ingredient in a place’s success is a cheerful, well-synced team.
